Your donation can make a world of difference! The 2020 Perfect Vision Campaign is dedicated to providing free vision screenings, eye exams, and prescription lenses to underserved communities in Chicago. Through the support from partners like you, we're breaking down barriers to essential eye care.
Why Give?
For students to succeed in school, they need one basic ability – the ability to see. Studies show that 80% of classroom learning is visual. Better vision helps students pay more attention and participate in class. Students with improved vision also receive better test scores in reading and math.
One study shows 61% of students who fail a vision screening don’t get the corrective care they need. Many of these students who fall through the cracks are often from low-income families. Even with free options, oftentimes, the odds are stacked up against them making it harder to receive the vision care they need.
What’s even more alarming are the stats below:
“The disparity in vision impairment and blindness for children and adolescents 17 years and younger from low income families grew to almost three times that of those from high income families”
“Black and Hispanic adolescents are twice as likely as white adolescents to have uncorrected distance vision impairment”
“Low-income minority youth appear to suffer from a disproportionately high prevalence of educationally relevant vision problems, and are clearly at high risk for inadequate treatment of vision problems.”
